A new super-sweet sweet corn hybrid
• Strong plants with robust growth habit
• Outstanding yield potential
• Gently tapered ears with excellent tip fill
• Suitable for pre-pack and processing markets
• Intermediate resistance to Maize Dwarf Mosaic Virus and Northern Corn Leaf Blight
Type:
A super sweet (sh2) hybrid for the pre pack or processing industry.
Maturity:
DEFENDER is a late maturing variety that can be harvested 90 days after planting (Southern African summer planting conditions apply). The date of harvesting may vary by as much as 10 days between early and late season plantings. This needs to be taken into consideration when planning planting schedules under different growing conditions. For accurate planning heat units should be monitored.
Plant Characteristics:
A very vigorous, large and prolific plant with an average height of 1.90m with ears positioned 75cm above the ground. Very low incidents of tillers can be expected.
Ear Characteristics:
DEFENDER has gently tapered and uniform ears with an average length of about 18cm and a diameter of 50mm with 16-18 kernel rows. Kernel depth is typically 11mm. DEFENDER has a very attractive deep golden yellow colour with a strong pericarp. This will allow for a longer harvesting period.
Disease Resistance:
IR: Northern Corn Leaf Blight (Et), Rust strain (Rp1-D), Maize Dwarf Mosaic Virus (MDMV).
Features & Benefits:
The vigorous, prolific nature of DEFENDER offers the grower the opportunity to produce high quality sweetcorn for the pre pack or processing industry. The leaf disease resistance, yield and quality of DEFENDER results in the lowering of risk and improvement of crop security. Due to the plant material mass, it can very successfully be used as silage after the ears are harvested.
