Proprietary onions for the South African market - Brits

In the Brits area of the North West province, Kitara and Tusker have been extensively trialled. The sowing season usually starts around 10 February with the optimal sowing slot being the first week of March. Both Kitara and Tusker are now commercially available, which will complement the current range of onion varieties available to the grower.

Tusker
Can be planted from 15 February to 10 March. It is an early-maturing variety with light straw-coloured bulbs, good foliar disease resistance and excellent quality. An added feature of this variety is very strong Pink Root Rot-resistance, important where the disease is known to be a problem.

Kitara
Being a later maturing variety can be planted from 10 February to 20 March with excellent colour and quality.
