Suntred: The new little gem lettuce to add colour to your range

With all the different lettuce types currently on the market, finding that ideal variety mix for your range can be daunting. With the launch of SUNTRED, choosing your red little gem variety has just been made easy. Little gem lettuce are miniature romaine lettuce varieties that form oblong-shaped heads known as hearts.

These varieties can be used as loose leaves in mixed lettuce pillow packs or sold as hearts with the outer leaves removed. Little gem varieties add texture and colour to mixed bags without using large leaves that need to be excessively cut to size, increasing the cut surface area, and reducing shelf life. There has always been a challenge with using red-coloured little gem lettuce in mixed packs: green inner leaves. As you remove more red outer leaves, the inner leaves lose their red colour. But not anymore. Since the introduction of SUNTRED, growers can use little gem lettuce varieties to bring colour and texture into their mixed packs without worrying about the green internal leaf colour. SUNTRED not only produces beautiful red outer leaves but red inner leaves too.

It also has a small cut surface, and because little gem leaves are compact, they do not need to be cut to size when used in mixed packs. SUNTRED is a medium-sized little gem variety with good tip burn and bolting tolerance. It can be planted at higher populations to get a more upright shape and offers the grower strong resistance to different strains of Bremia to help fight diseases such as downy mildew. (BL 16-26, 28-30, 32-34 EU). Add colour to your specialty range by incorporating SUNTRED into your planting programme this season.
